Dear United Against Puppy Mills,
We are writing you this letter and request that you publish it on your website to help our situation here in East Earl Township. During the zoning meeting on Monday, East Earl Township approved three kennels that have been knowingly operating illegally for years. As East Earl Township residents, we attended the meeting and were disheartened by the lack of interest of the township officers. After the meeting we were also upset by the unprofessional behavior exhibited by the zoning officer. One of the officers compared running an illegal kennel to selling Avon or Pampered Chef. The kennel has a much greater adverse affect on our community. Another officer said that approving the kennels is "the price you pay for living in an agricultural community". We don't think we have to "pay the price" for anything illegal.
All three kennel owners said, they would try to comply with the 8 pm to 8 am noise ordinance to keep their dogs inside. One kennel owner clearly did not comply with zoning in his testimony and was still approved. Two of the three owners asked for variances to the 200 ft. from the property line rule. One of the owners had multiple violations over the last three years. With these three kennels being K 2,3,5 respectively, they could potentially put out a minimum of 402 dogs and an undetermined maximum number of puppies per year. That is irresponsible!
In closing, we would like any interested people to write the township, senators, representatives and express their displeasure over the approval of these kennels.
Thank you,
Dave Holroyd and Steve Wlodarczyk
